Confirmation

Click for Current Confirmation/Surge News

Confirmation is a two-year study of the basic tenets of Christianity in an effort to help students get the bigger picture of God’s relationship with humanity and the instructions he gives for living life in the most fruitful and God-honoring ways (click for more information on discipleship and Zion's FAITH document).  At Zion this is typically done while the students are in the 7th and 8th grades, but this study should not be limited to those age groups.

Confirmation Mission

Foundations for Faith is one of the two years.  It is an overview of the Bible which gives the students a glimpse of what’s inside. The other year is Lessons in Living the Christian Faith, which is a study of Martin Luther’s Small Catechism.  Both of these look at what it means to say, “This is who (or more importantly ‘whose’) I am… This is what I believe…and this is how I’m going to live.”

At the end of the two years each student is given the opportunity to make those very statements and affirm their baptism.  This is a public declaration of faith where the students confess their belief and commit to living their life in service to God and their neighbors.  For many of them, they were baptized as infants or young children, now they have the opportunity to claim the power and promises of their baptism for themselves.

Student Responsibilities:

As a baptized partner of Zion Lutheran Church, and in response to God’s grace and love given to me in Jesus Christ, I wish to be enrolled in the SURGE/Confirmation Ministry of this congregation.

I agree to:

1.    Cooperate to the best of my ability with the confirmation leaders (adult small group leaders, youth director, and pastor), as well as my fellow students, in preparing me for Affirmation of Baptism.

2.    Participate, with a positive attitude & open spirit, in all classes and activities of the confirmation ministry.  This includes completing my homework and parent participation questions each week, as well as attending weekly worship.

3.    Pray for growth in faith in & love for Jesus Christ.

4.    Try, to the best of my ability, to place my talents at the service of other people.

5.    Accept more responsibilities in my family, my church, and my community.

I ask the help of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit that I might be faithful to this covenant.  I also ask the prayers and support of the partners of Zion Lutheran Church.

Parent Responsibilities:

In Christian love my child was presented for Holy Baptism.  I now renew my promise to faithfully bring him/her to services in God’s house, and to teach him/her the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments.  As these years pass, I will help my child to better understand the Holy Scriptures and provide for his/her instruction in the Christian faith, that living in the covenant of his/her baptism and in communion with the church, he/she may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ.  I promise to encourage my child in their weekly homework to discuss the parent participation question with my son/daughter, and to regularly pray for their spiritual growth.  I also pledge to work in partnership with my son/daughter’s small group leader and the pastor, and the youth director of Zion Lutheran Church.

I pray the Lord will continue to pour His Holy Spirit upon my child, giving him/her the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, and the spirit of joy in His presence.  (These words are taken from your child’s Baptismal Service.)

Congregation Responsibilites:

Zion Lutheran Church promises to provide services, classes, appropriate ministries, and support both students and parents.  Furthermore, we commit ourselves to continued faithful witness to the Gospel.  We pledge to pray that the Lord will bless parents, students, and adult small group leaders with diligence & perseverance.
