Sunday May 14th
We made it home. Although we are all tired, sore and maybe a little over-whelmed, each and every one of us would return for more. We hope this blog and the pictures it contains, helps others to understand the need to help our neighbors. It took 201 labor hours to muck the second house. If working 8 hours a Saturday (after a week of your job), it would take a single person 25 Saturdays, or 6 months, to clean up their house. Our prayers remain with the house owners, Mike (from the first house), John, Maria and their four kids as they continue to re-build their houses and lives after such a devastating event.

Thursday May 11th
Today we smelled the smelliest smell of all the smells we have ever smelled in all our years of smelling.
Wednesday May 10th
Today we dug into our second house. And I mean dug into in the literal sense. This house was under 10 to 12 feet of water, yes feet of water. The floodwater was kind enough to leave about 6 to 8 inches of mud (or Muck) on the floor. So we dug our way into the house from the front door, side door and back door, making our way in. There was so much water in this house that it covered the main floor ceiling, causing the ceiling to collapse, which brought down insulation and everything that was in the attic. When we first walked in we all thought it would take us weeks to get this house clean, but now I think we will get it done.

Today was the first day of Mucking houses for the group. We are working with a group from Michigan. We are finishing a house that was started by another group and we will probably finish it up tomorrow and move onto another house.

Sunday May 7th We Made it!!! After only 5 U-turns, 17 hours of driving, a delay for gear and a couple of malfunctions by the navigational equipment, we are in New Orleans. Ok, so officially we are staying in Mendeville and will be driving into work on houses in New Orleans, but hey close enough. We start Mucking a house tomorrow morning and we are excited, well some of us are excited. It sounds like dirty work, but that is why we are here. |
